Overview

The Salines de Montjoly, located in the commune of Rémire-Montjoly, is a natural site protected by the Coastal Conservatory. It is a unique ecosystem where beach, dune ridge, and wetland converge, offering rich and varied biodiversity. Owned by the Coastal Conservatory since 1985, it lies 10 km from Cayenne and is explored via a 2.5 km loop.

Why Visit

Beyond the walk itself, the Salines are a vital space for local biodiversity, where flora and fauna coexist in a fragile ecological balance. The 2.5 km loop, about 1 hour 30 minutes on foot, follows the beach before turning inland into the wetland. An observation carbet stands out in the middle of the marsh and wooden boardwalks cross the mangrove: herons, scarlet ibis, jacanas, fiddler crabs and caimans can be seen there, especially early morning or late afternoon.

Practical Information

Allow 1 hour 30 minutes for the loop, which is dotted with interpretive panels. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for birdlife. Check road conditions and weather before setting out. Bring sun protection, water, and everything you need to explore the site safely.
