Le sentier nature du Centre Spatial Guyanais

Overview

Located on the edge of the Guiana Space Centre, this recreation zone trail invites visitors to discover the biodiversity of French Guiana. The route winds through a variety of iconic landscapes: swamp forest, natural savannas, and areas of secondary forest.

The main loop covers 4 km, with a variant along the "piste du coq" (1.2 km), for approximately 1 hour 20 minutes of leisurely walking. The difficulty level is easy, suitable for all abilities. The trailhead is accessible from the parking area at the CSG entrance or from the Anse golf course, with clear signage throughout.

Why Visit

These habitats support remarkable wildlife and plant life. Among the iconic species, visitors may spot the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), squirrel monkeys, and three-toed sloths in the wooded areas, as well as birds such as the bearded tachuri and the capped seedeater. The trail also aims to raise awareness of the fragility of French Guiana's ecosystems: savannas cover just 0.3% of the territory and are threatened by invasive species such as Acacia mangium, as well as agricultural and land-use pressures. Conservation and awareness efforts are led by organizations including GEPOG and CNES. Closed to hunting and fishing, the Space Centre estate acts in practice as a refuge for wildlife. CNES also runs a free guided walk through the savannas, led by an ONF ranger: roughly once a month, early in the morning and sometimes at dusk, for about two hours. Meeting point at the Musée de l'Espace, booking required at least 48 hours ahead, from age 8 and with ID, around twenty people per outing. Practical Information

Distance: main loop of 4 km, with a 1.2 km variant along the piste du coq. Duration: approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Difficulty: easy. To make the most of the trail, stay on marked paths, observe the rules (no smoking, no picking plants, no disturbing animals), and come properly equipped: suitable footwear, water, and binoculars for birdwatching.

The trailhead is accessible from the parking area at the entrance to the Guiana Space Centre (Route de l'Espace, Kourou) or from the Anse golf course. Clear signage guides visitors throughout.
