Overview

The Museum of Guyanese Cultures, located in Cayenne, is a gateway to the history, traditions and cultural richness of French Guiana. It invites visitors to explore a territory shaped by multiple influences, where every exhibition tells a story.

Why Visit

The museum occupies two neighbouring Creole houses. At 54 rue Madame Payé, the former home of Herménégilde Tell, head of the penal administration and father-in-law of Félix Éboué, has been restored to show the interior of a 19th-century Cayenne house: furniture, hand-cranked coffee grinders, oil lamps and everyday objects. At number 78, the annexe hosts temporary exhibitions devoted to the cultures that make up French Guiana: the first Amerindian peoples, Bushinengue, Creoles and more recent waves of immigration.
