According to the artist, the image symbolises French Guiana's role in welcoming and protecting Africa during a dark period of history. The woman, with her direct gaze and head held high, is both nurturer and warrior: she holds a sabre symbolising the power and sovereignty of the feminine matrix. Through this work, Bassa invites us to reflect on resilience, welcome, and the fundamental role of women in the history of this land.
