"YUNAE" is a work by artist Bassa, visible on the façade of a building on Avenue de l'Université Harvard in Cayenne, French Guiana. The artist's first work executed with aerosol spray paint, it is inspired by the Voodoo deity Erzulie and reflects a connection between Africa and French Guiana.
YUNAE depicts a Kalin'a indigenous woman breastfeeding a Black baby. According to the artist, the image symbolises French Guiana's role in welcoming and protecting Africa during a dark period of history. The woman, with her direct gaze and head held high, is both nurturer and warrior: she holds a sabre symbolising the power and sovereignty of the feminine matrix. Through this work, Bassa invites us to reflect on resilience, welcome, and the fundamental role of women in the history of this land.
