Overview

The Cock-of-the-Rock Trail is located in Roura, in French Guiana. This 1.5 km round-trip hike, with an average duration of about 1 hour 30, plunges into the heart of dense forest along an enriching and accessible route. The cock-of-the-rock, with its brilliant orange plumage and distinctive crest, is one of French Guiana's most emblematic birds.

Why Visit

The trail offers the opportunity to observe the cock-of-the-rock in its forest habitat. This bird, endemic to the region, has been fully protected since 1986. It favours mountainous massifs between 100 and 1,500 metres in altitude, where it finds caves and rock shelters for nesting; its presence is an indicator of the health of the forest ecosystem. Between November and January, males gather in display arenas known as "leks" to court females — a remarkable natural spectacle in which they deploy their plumage through vocal sessions, movements, and static displays.

Practical Information

It is recommended to wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes, as the path can be slippery and wet, especially after rain. To observe these birds without disturbing their habitat, be patient and quiet, and use binoculars to minimise disturbance. Note: the ONF may close the trail temporarily for safety reasons, in particular after heavy rain or high winds. Check its status before setting out.

Getting There

To reach the trail, head towards the Kaw road and park just before the sawmill. The entrance, discreetly located on the left-hand side of the road, marks the start of the route.
