Located on the south-western slopes of the Kaw mountain, the Trésor Regional Nature Reserve covers nearly 2,500 hectares — around 6% of the region — along the Kaw road (departmental road no. 6, RD6). It consists mainly of tropical forest, with wet savannahs that shelter species characteristic of open environments.
The reserve offers two loop trails, each taking 1.5 to 2 hours to walk. The Botanical Trail, open since the early 2000s, invites free exploration at the heart of the summit forest along a waymarked route of about 1.8 km. The Carbon Trail, created in 2014 with support from WWF Guiana, branches off from the botanical trail for 1.4 km and helps visitors understand carbon flows, which are essential to how forest ecosystems function.
The reserve owes its origins to a Dutch naturalist living in French Guiana, who enabled the Trésor Foundation, based in Utrecht, to purchase the land in 1995 — land that had been for sale by the Diocese of French Guiana since 1991. The area was designated a voluntary nature reserve (RNV) in 1997, managed by a local association from that year and opened to the public in 1999. In 2005, the RNV status was replaced by that of Regional Nature Reserves (RNR), and the Guyane Region established the Trésor RNR in 2009. Between 2009 and 2012, the botanical trail was redesigned with 6 totem-style interpretation stations and 80 illustrated labels along 1.7 km of trail.
Wear appropriate footwear, especially in wet conditions when rocks and roots become slippery. Protect yourself from biting insects (long sleeves, repellent) and stay hydrated. Darkness falls quickly under the canopy: avoid starting a trail in the late afternoon or bring a torch. If you encounter a potentially dangerous species (snake, scorpion), go around it without getting close. Avoid touching leaves, trunks, and branches with bare hands, and watch your step carefully.
The reserve is accessible from the Kaw road (RD6), on the territory of the commune of Roura.
