Located in the municipality of Rémire-Montjoly, French Guiana, the Parc du Moulin à Vent — inaugurated in August 2024 — offers a pleasant natural setting while showcasing an important historical landmark. The windmill, dating from the eighteenth century and listed as a historic monument since 1994, has strong historical ties to the former Loyola plantation.
The park features a 750-metre walking trail around the windmill, accessible to families, sports enthusiasts, and visitors of all ages. Equipped with benches, it also has a multipurpose space suitable for artistic and cultural events: concerts, exhibitions, weddings, and other gatherings can all be organised here.
The windmill dates from the eighteenth century and has been listed as a historic monument since 1994. A witness to the colonial era, it is linked to the former Loyola plantation — an emblematic agricultural estate in local history that recalls the plantation era in French Guiana. A full restoration is planned: reinstallation of the sails, reconstruction of the conical roof, and restoration of the internal grinding mechanism. This project is funded by the French State, the European Union, and the Territorial Collectivity of French Guiana.
The park is open daily from 7:00 am to 6:45 pm. The main entrance is on Avenue Jean-Marie Michotte, next to the Territorial Archives of French Guiana and the Montjoly post office. To protect the site, several rules apply: barbecuing, smoking or vaping, consuming alcohol, removing any vegetation (subject to a fine), bringing animals including leashed dogs, and accessing the site with unauthorised motor vehicles are all prohibited. For further information, the Direction de la gestion des espaces communaux of Rémire-Montjoly can be reached on 05 94 35 90 90.
