Located in Rémire-Montjoly, Habitation Vidal is a former colonial estate from the 18th century dedicated to sugarcane cultivation and sugar production. The site played a significant role in the history of slavery in French Guiana. Listed as a historic monument in 1999, it sits at the foot of the Mahury plateau, deep within a humid tropical forest.
Visitors explore the remnants of the plantation: the sugarcane mill, the residential buildings, and traces of the era of slavery. The trail winds through a humid tropical forest where birds and wildlife can be spotted, with information panels covering the history and biodiversity of the area.
The year 1822 marked a turning point with the installation of the first steam engine in French Guiana, which improved sugar production and spurred the plantation's growth. After nearly two centuries of activity, Habitation Vidal ceased operations in 1930 and fell into disuse. Its classification as a historic monument in 1999 ensured its preservation and restoration.
The trail to the habitation covers 3.5 km. The terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle inclines, and the forest shade makes for a comfortable walk. Wear sturdy walking shoes, bring water and snacks, apply sunscreen, and carry a hat. The trail is clearly waymarked.
