History

The church was built in the late 17th century by Jesuits. It survived the centuries and was restored in the 19th century, at which point it was dedicated to Saint Dominique, in reference to Dominic of Guzmán — a Castilian friar born around 1170 near Caleruega, Spain, and who died on 6 August 1221 in Bologna, Italy. Thanks to the commitment of the municipality of Roura, the Fondation du Patrimoine and Mission Patrimoine, the building has benefited from restoration campaigns: structural crack repairs, roof replacement and the addition of a lightning rod. Saint Dominic was canonised in 1234, thirteen years after his death; his feast day is celebrated on 6 August.
