Located in the town of Sinnamary, French Guiana, Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church is one of the most important religious monuments in the department. Listed as a historic monument since 1997, it bears witness to the Catholic presence in French Guiana since the 17th century. It is built in reinforced concrete in a neo-Gothic style.
The church is an important place of worship for Catholics in French Guiana, as well as a pilgrimage site dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Its neo-Gothic architecture features pointed arches, coloured stained-glass windows and sculptures. The interior is richly decorated: stained-glass windows depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, while the chancel houses a large statue of the Virgin and a 30-stop organ.
The church was built between 1928 and 1937 to designs by Father Leroy. It has a central nave and two side aisles, as well as a 56-metre bell tower. This tower — the most prominent feature of the building — is octagonal in shape and topped with a spire. The church was listed as a historic monument in 1997.
