Fort Céperou is a historic site in Cayenne, French Guiana, established on Mont Céperou, a hill overlooking the city and the mouth of the Cayenne river. Today a listed historic monument, it is open to the public.
The fort offers sweeping views over the city of Cayenne, the Cayenne river, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is also an archaeological site: excavations have uncovered the remains of ancient fortifications dating from the 17th century, bearing witness to the eventful history of French Guiana.
Construction of the fort began in 1652 by Frenchman Charles Poncet de Brétigny, who purchased the hill from the Galibi people; it was then named Fort Saint-Michel and intended to protect the city from attack. The fort was seized by the Dutch in 1664, then by the French in 1676. Rebuilt in the 18th century, it was converted into a prison in the 19th century.
The fort is accessible on foot or by car. It is located near the Place des Palmistes in downtown Cayenne.
