Overview

The Municipal Ecomuseum of Approuague-Kaw, better known as the Éco-Musée de Régina-Kaw, is located in the heart of the commune of Régina, approximately 115 km from Cayenne. Housed in the restored Aubin-Laigné Creole house, it spans more than 1,500 m². The only ecomuseum in French Guiana, it holds the "Musée de France" label and traces the history of the Approuague River from the Amerindian era to contemporary issues. Its mission is to preserve and promote the tangible and intangible heritage of the region, with a focus on archaeology, local communities, traditional craftsmanship, industrial heritage, and the natural environment.

Why Visit

The ecomuseum features a two-level permanent exhibition, a shed housing a historic sawmill with woodworking machinery, and a 200 m² ethnobotanical garden displaying local edible, aromatic, and medicinal plants. The themes covered are wide-ranging: performing arts, flora and fauna, culinary traditions, music, ornithology, basketwork, and archaeology. Temporary exhibitions regularly bring the space to life, including tributes to local figures and spotlights on biodiversity. The site also reflects the multicultural character of this rural community of 700 inhabitants, shaped by Creole, Amerindian, Brazilian, Hmong, and Maroon influences.

History

Inaugurated in May 2008, the ecomuseum is rooted in a commune bordered by the Approuague River, whose history was marked by slavery and the sugar industry. These aspects are explored through research into former sugar plantations such as La Constance, whose remains date to the 1820s–1830s. Three-year research programmes, carried out in partnership with institutions such as the C2RMF, investigate these traces to educate visitors about French Guiana's colonial past.
