Overview

Located in the heart of Cayenne, capital of French Guiana, the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Cayenne. This neoclassical building of stone and brick has a portico façade and a two-storey wooden bell tower. It is the largest church in French Guiana, built on a basilican plan with double side aisles. It stands as a landmark of French Guiana's religious and cultural heritage.

The cathedral's interior features colourful stained-glass windows, paintings and sculptures. The marble high altar and gold tabernacle reflect the richness of the building, which also houses a collection of religious objects including the relics of saints. An active place of worship for the Catholic community, it is also a key reference point for discovering Guianese history and culture.

History

Work began in 1825, replacing the earlier Saint-Nicolas church, and was completed in 1833; the building was inaugurated in 1861. The church became a cathedral in 1933 and was consecrated on 9 November 1934. A reinforced-concrete chancel was added in the 1950s, and the building has been listed in its entirety as a historic monument since 29 October 2012. It serves today as a place of worship for the Catholic community, with masses celebrated daily.
