Overview

Crique Patate is one of the best-known swimming creeks among residents of the île de Cayenne. Its proximity to the main urban areas makes it a very popular destination. The site is subject to tidal influence: currents can be strong on the ebb tide, and at high tide the water covers many of the rocks.

Why Visit

Crique Patate is a place to swim and relax, ideal for a day out with family or friends within easy reach of the urban areas of the île de Cayenne. The site does suffer from littering by some visitors — broken glass, bottle caps and plastic are sometimes left behind. Volunteer groups regularly organise clean-up days to keep the site enjoyable. Please take all your rubbish with you.

Practical Information

The site is tidal: be mindful of strong currents on the ebb. At high tide, water covers many rocks — do not dive head-first. The old wooden picnic structures have almost entirely disappeared. If the track entrance is blocked, allow about ten minutes on foot from the road.

Getting There

Crique Patate is in the commune of Macouria. From the RN1, take the D5 toward the village of Montsinnery. Just before the Zoo de Guyane, turn left and take the white dirt track starting from the road; signposts mark the entrance. If the track is blocked, leave your vehicle on the roadside and walk about ten minutes to the creek. With a boat, you can also reach the village of Montsinnery and then the old port of Cayenne by passing under the Larivot bridge.
