The Saut Lucifer is located upstream from the Petit-Saut dam, in the commune of Sinnamary, in French Guiana. This site reveals itself as a setting deep within the forest, where tranquility reigns. During the dry season, small sandbars appear along its banks. It is a sought-after spot for those who want to escape the daily hustle and reconnect with nature.
The Saut Lucifer is a prime destination for fishing enthusiasts: it is renowned for aimara fishing, drawing anglers from afar for a sport fishing experience in an unspoilt natural setting. The boat journey to reach it, weaving through the dead tree trunks emerging from the lake, offers a unique natural spectacle and the opportunity to observe the surrounding forest.
The Petit-Saut dam, commissioned in 1994, was built to meet the growing electricity demands of the region by harnessing the hydraulic power of the Sinnamary River. This project created a large reservoir that flooded part of the tropical forest as well as several inhabited sites. The submersion of these areas led to the loss of natural habitats, but also gave rise to new aquatic ecosystems that have promoted the diversification of fish species. The site illustrates the delicate balance between economic development and nature conservation.
Access is via the Petit-Saut road, with its entrance off the RN2. Once at the Petit-Saut dam, a boat allows you to wind your way through the dead tree trunks in the lake. Allow several hours of navigation to reach the Saut Lucifer.
